Gallery Delaive is proud to announce Sam Francis: 25 portraits. Sam Francis’ (1923- 1994) career spanned approximately 50 years and includes a staggering amount of paintings, drawings and prints. Mostly famous for his abstract action paintings, influenced by the work of Clyfford Still and Jackson Pollock, this exhibition aims to show a different side of the artist Sam Francis, showing a series of (self)portraits, painted throughout his career.

Interested in Jungian psychology, Francis was committed to the exploration of his interior life. Carl Gustav Jung, a former student of Sigmund Freud, developed a unique form of psychotherapy, called analytic psychology. In the 1970’s Francis began working with Jungian therapists allowing his unconscious to dictate his process and painting matrix compositions as well as a number of selfportraits. Some of these selfportraits were shown at Galerie Kornfeld und Klipstein in Bern, Switzerland, in 1977.

Sam Francis: 25 portraits shows a unique collection of (self)portraits by Sam Francis, never showed together before. A rare chance to take a look into the psyche of the artist.
