Sam Francis’s world was expansive and international. Within the artist’s extensive archives exists a galaxy of historical paths connecting so many others. The artist influenced and was influenced by so many from Japan, France, Switzerland, Mexico, and all over the US. He counted many talented people as friends, colleagues and family. In an effort to see how his history intersected with so many others we proudly support this online publication of articles titled Archive Connection. We invite colleagues, staff, scholars and interested people into Francis’s archives to expand that information into small essays. Our goal is to promote the exploration of historical figures that have not otherwise been given larger platforms. We also hope that researchers and historians will be introduced to the scope of Francis’s archives.

  • One of the most poignant pieces in the Sam Francis Papers now housed at the Getty Research Institute is also invisible.

  • Rachel Jacobs is one of the most significant commentators on Francis’s early painting.

  • Although Francis never set foot in Beatrice Monti’s wondrous art-filled retreat, their paths crossed across geography and over time due to her representation of his work at Galleria dell’Ariete.

  • Sam and Ting’s friendship spanned years during which both men moved around quite a bit (especially Sam) so Ting’s vivid letters were a way of entertaining Sam and staying connected at a distance.

  • In our premier Archive Connection essay, Leila Elliot, Archives Researcher, has investigated the artist Shirley Jaffe. We hope you will enjoy this first installment and look forward to many more.
