Event Details
In the ‘50s, Sam Francis lived and worked in Paris. There he became friends with artists like Walasse Ting, Karel Appel and Pierre Alechinsky. Over the years these artists inspired each other in their works. Occasionally they even made works of art together. An example of this is the painting made by Ting and Alechinsky, called ‘à deux pinceaux’, which can also be seen at the exhibition.
The emphasis of the exhibition is mainly on the Paris period – the 50’s and 60’s. Exhibits include the lesser-known abstract works by Ting and the remarkable paintings by Francis that were inspired by Claude Monet’s water lilies. The exhibition also shows a poetic exchange of letters between Ting and Francis – never exhibited before – as well as the colourful costumes of the Chinese-American artist.
