April 7 - June 17, 2017

The de Saisset Museum celebrates the life and work of Paula Z. Kirkeby, Owner of Smith Andersen Editions, Palo Alto, California with an exhibition of works from the Smith Andersen Editions Archive housed in the de Saisset Museum’s permanent collection. Since 1984 the de Saisset Museum has housed the archive for Smith Andersen Editions, a nationally recognized fine art press. Under Paula Kirkeby's vision and leadership, Smith Andersen Editions distinguished itself as one of the pre-eminent fine art presses in the United States. Known for its unwavering commitment to serving artists, Smith Andersen Editions focused on monotype and monoprint—two methods of printmaking that result in limited edition impressions. Unique and Multiple is both a chronological survey of work produced by the press and a tribute to its founder and guiding spirit.  Paula Kirkeby was an irrepressible impresario of creativity as well as a dependable patron of the museum. She will be remembered not only for her singular, outspoken personality but also for her lasting, cohesive impact on Bay Area communities of artists, printers, collectors, teachers and students.
